We all have an important role to play in safeguarding the future of the Web. Representatives from more than 80 organizations drafted the Web Contract on behalf of governments, businesses and civil society. This contract sets out the commitments that should guide digital policies.
In order to achieve the objectives of the Contract, governments, businesses, civil society and individuals must commit to the sustainable development of these policies, as well as to the defense and implementation of the text.
The contract, which you can consult here, contains 9 principles that refer to governments (the first three), companies (the next 3) and citizenship (the remaining).
So, the first principle is to make sure that everyone can connect to the Internet. The idea is to establish as a political goal the need that, by 2025, 1GB of mobile data does not cost more than 2% of average monthly income and that by 2030 broadband Internet access be available to at least 90% of the population.
In this sense, governments will have an important role to play and will have to guarantee it, even with legal frameworks and concrete actions.
The protection of privacy is also enshrined in the contract, and emphasis is placed on the rights of citizens on this issue, and on the role of companies and administrations in guaranteeing these rights.
Citizens are asked by the contract to create and collaborate on the Web to ensure it has "rich and relevant content for all."
There is also talk of the need to ensure the accessibility of websites. TOTHOMweb signed the contract as a company and most of its workers did so individually.
You can join the Web Contract as an individual or on behalf of your organization here.
